[재난/사고 영어 표현] 이태원 참사 외신 보도

이번 이태원 참사는 각국 외신에서도 비중있게 다루고 있습니다. 각종 사건 사고와 재난 관련 영어 표현을 외신 보도를 통해 몇 가지 알아보려 합니다.

 

이태원 참사는 외신에서 다음과 같은 다양한 표현으로 사용되고 있습니다.

외신에서는 '압사(death from pressure, be crushed[pressed, squeezed] to death)'라는 단어를 사용하지 않더라고요. 'crush'라는 표현 자체에 압사의 의미가 포함되어 있기 때문인 것으로 보입니다.

The crush took place in the nightlife district of Itaewon. What caused the crush is not clear, but witnesses say partygoers had been packed tightly in the district’s narrow streets and it was difficult to move around.

The dead included 26 foreign nationals.

한국어만 보면 '26 people of the dead are foreigners'와 같은 문장을 떠올리기 쉽습니다.

하지만 원어민들은 이러한 표현을 잘 사용하지 않아요. 'include'와 같은 동사를 활용하면 세련되게 표현할 수 있습니다.

- 맥락상 신고가 들어왔다고 해석하는 것이 자연스럽습니다.

A number of people on the sloping pathway fell over, causing a massive crush. Crowds pressing from both ends of the alley made it impossible to get out.

• Don't resist the force of the crowd

• When there's a lull in movement, work your way diagonally to the edge of the crowd
• 인파가 잦아들면 가장자리로 대각선 방향으로 빠져나오세요
• If you fall down, protect yourself by curling into a ball
• 넘어지면 몸을 둥글게 말아 스스로를 보호하세요
• Stay calm and get up as soon as you can
• 침착함을 유지하고 가능한 만큼만 일어서도록 하세요

More generally, crowd control experts also advise people to try to stay upright and reserve their energy.

전문가 조언에 따르면 인파가 몰리는 상황에서는 일반적으로 꼿꼿하게 서 있는 자세를 유지하고 최대한 에너지를 비축할 수 있도록 노력해야 한다고 합니다.

Focus on getting air and try to save your breath. In a crowd, the heat and weight of bodies pressing against you will make it hard for you to breathe. Save your oxygen, don't waste it screaming unless you have to.

숨을 최대한 길게 들이쉬는 것에 집중합니다. 인파가 몰린 상황에서는 다른 사람들의 열과 무게가 압박으로 작용해 호흡이 힘들어집니다. 산소를 최대한 저장하세요. 꼭 필요한 상황이 아니라면 소리를 지르지 않는 것이 좋습니다.
